New Amsterdam

A Dutch composer and Manhattanite journalist approached us to assist in the renovation of their 500 square foot pied-a-terre located in a pre-war, landmark building in the heart of New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. The interior renovation included new lighting, flooring, wall treatments, refurbishing existing built-in cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, and the selection of various furnishings. The resulting space is an urban abode with modern day amenities and nods to old world charm.

The couple spends most of their time in Upstate New York but comes into the city for both business and pleasure. One of the requirements of the redesigned apartment was to have dedicated work areas for each of them—one of which is in the bedroom, furnished with a modern, transforming bed-desk system while the second is an unobtrusive wall-mounted desk in the living area. The couple also loves hosting friends to enjoy the spectacular, three-sided city views. We designed a bar-like island with a rustic, metal counter for both food preparation and dining, which maximizes space and ties together the living and kitchen areas.
